Why there's no short story today

I’m in a bit of the creative doldrums at the moment. I have a short story in mind, and even some idea of what will happen in the story. Whatever I do though it just doesn’t seem to come out right.

I’m of two minds on how to handle this. The first, and probably what I should do, is to write it anyway, and then fix it later. The second, and what I’m going to do, is let it percolate in the back of my brain for a day or so and hope I can get the story down in a manner I feel is suitable.

There are a couple of reasons for this. Partly it’s because I had a weekend mostly bereft of sleep, and I’m still feeling the ill effects. I’d like to say this was for a good reason, but it wasn’t. As I’ve stated on the pages of this blog before I suffer from occasional insomnia. This weekend was a particularly bad example of this.

A second reason is because it’s Monday, and the first of the month. Mondays have a bit of extra work that goes with them. The first of the month also brings with it a few extra tasks. While even together neither is particularly onerous in terms of work load, it does mean I have a little less time to write. This story is going to take a while (it may very well be the longest one I’ve put here. I’m not sure yet) and I want to make sure I minimize distractions.

Lastly, there are other writing-related tasks I’m working on. A friend pointed me to a site that has resources for getting stories published, and I’m preparing to submit to one of them. Ultimately I would like to be able to make money at writing. Though I am under no illusions that I am likely to be able to write for a living, a little extra money in the pocket never hurts.

Also, getting a story published would be one heck of an ego boost.
