We’ve recorded what will be the first episode of the Unqualified Networks Podcast. We recoded a previous one last week, but thanks to some technical snares this will be the first one to see the web. It was a lot of fun, and it feels like I’ll be able to look forward to recording every week.
Right now the podcast is without music. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, we haven’t sat down to find tracks that will work well for lead in and lead out tracks. There’s a certain tone we want to set, and selecting music is part of that.
Another part, and the one I’m most concerned with, is licensing. Intellectual property rights and they way they relate to the Internet is something of a puzzle right now. Were we running just a regular radio show we could use regular pop songs and the station we were on would cover the fees for it. As it is we need to find something that isn’t likely to get us sued.
There are options. A simple google search will find plenty of “pod-safe” music out there. Creative Commons and Public Domain music does exist. If I didn’t have another option this is likely the route I would go.
I’m a bit luckier than that. My brother is a musician, and I’m fortunate that he has agreed to record some music for us. Even then though we could have some trouble.
If he were to record a cover of something, he would be required to pay a fee to the rights holders for that song. Likewise, anything he composes for us will be subject to scrutiny in case he (intentionally or otherwise) borrowed a riff from another song. Regardless of what happens we will likely be taking at least some risk.
I am of course likely being over dramatic about all this. In all likelyhood we could use a well known song by a famous artist and get away with it. Or show just isn’t going to be that big. Despite that I’m trying to sweat these sorts of details now to protect myself later. How much effort that will require remains to be seen,.
